In times of “why” and “how come”

God is far greater than any human being, and therefore you cannot always understand His ways. Yes, you can and must know God, but you will never be able to fully understand Him. A “hidden” God? Have you ever heard of that before? Yes, you know God is almighty, gracious, full of love, forgives sin, and is the Creator – but “hidden”? It is clear that this attribute of God is not spoken about much. Perhaps people are cautious to say it out loud. In Proverbs 25 verse 2, you read that God’s glory lies in the fact that He is a hidden God.

I have learned one thing in life: many things happen in your life, and many more things will still happen, that you will not understand. You must hold on to what you know about God in times when things happen for which you have no answers. Always know that God is love. Know that He will never leave you or abandon you. Know that He is Immanuel, God with you. Hold on to the certain knowledge that God is never far from you, but always very near – especially in times of your “whys” and “how comes.”

George MacDonald describes it so beautifully:

Times of sorrow and suffering are merely the shadow of God’s wings.

Charles Spurgeon expands on this:

Just as surely as God’s children end up in the fiery furnace,

just as surely He is there inside it with them.

The mistake many of us make is to equate God with our circumstances. When things go badly or are difficult, then God is loveless and someone who does not care about you. When things go well, God is good and loving. So who God is to you goes up and down like a seesaw depending on your circumstances. This is a major mistake that many people make. It is important to remember that God is exalted above your circumstances. God is who He says He is, regardless of your circumstances. Your circumstances do not determine who God is, nor how God is. Who God is does not seesaw and change from day to day depending on what happens to you.

You can know the following and hold on to it in your very best times and your very hardest times:
• God already loves you
• God still loves you
• God always holds you
• He carries you close to His heart
• He is always with you
• He does not change as your circumstances change

Always live from these truths.
