Peace

Peace in my life will make me more like Jesus, and that is who I should become. Yes, this is easier said than done, because the world in which you and I live is seldom peaceful.

We often think of peace as a “feeling”. We then want to replace our anxiety and depression with peace. Biblical peace begins with a sincere relationship with God and with other people. Peace with God is possible only through Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, Isaiah already foretells Jesus’ coming to earth and the enriching impact of His reign, which is founded on peace, in Isaiah 9:5: “For a Child is born to us, a Son is given to us. He will be the ruler with the royal titles: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Although Christ’s life on earth was often turbulent, His death for us made it possible for us to experience a life of peace.

When conflict arose between Abram and Lot, Abram took the lesser place and moved away. He placed peace within his family above his own wishes (Genesis 13). Another example of a life that pursues peace is the life of Jesus. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5), Jesus encourages us to live in peace. In verse 9 He says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for God will say to them: You are My children.” This should be one of our most important goals—even more important than bringing offerings to God. Matthew 5:23-24 says: “If you are bringing your offering to the altar and remember there that another person has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and first go and make peace with that person. Then come back and bring your offering.”

In the Old Testament, the word peace (shalom) refers to the wholeness and peace a person experiences in God’s presence, even in difficult circumstances. Worry is one of the greatest enemies of peace in our lives. It makes us tense during the day and keeps us awake at night. True peace comes only from God and is completely different from the peace the world offers.

Strive to be free from worry by living at peace with God, with others and with myself. Make Philippians 4:6-7 your motto for life: “Do not worry about anything, but pray about everything. Ask God for everything you need, while also thanking Him for everything He does. When you pray in this way, you will experience God’s peace. This peace is more wonderful than anyone can imagine. Because you belong to Christ, the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds like a security guard.”
